Time to Invest in an Electric-Themed Private Number Plate?

Whatever your politics, the good news for the car industry from The Queen's Speech was the push for driverless cars and more charging points in petrol stations to help drive the country towards safer, greener roads.

Which means the prices could soon be rising for any private number plates along the likes of "ACDC," "V0LT," "WATT," "AMP" and so on.

Public trials are set to roll on roads across Milton Keynes and Coventry this year, with Autodrive UK tests taking place at a proving ground track in Nuneaton for advanced technologies. These include connected-car technology being showcased in the likes of new Range Rover models that provide features like emergency vehicle warnings to alert drivers to the imminent arrival of ambulances or fire engines. Intersection collision warning systems caution against moving off into dangerous situations at junctions, while in-vehicle signage provides clear alerts for queues ahead, slippery road conditions and other hazards.

Hopefully, when all of these systems are standard on cars, then those unsightly gantry systems appearing on the current generations of smart motorways like the M3 can all come down again, as we won't need to rely on them. That will help make our roads look a little less cluttered, just one of the smaller benefits we might eventually see in the future.
If these trials overcome the many challenges of British roads, then the acceptance of self-driving cars with smart technology will happen sooner rather than later. Trials in other countries have already racked up hundreds of thousands of miles and, despite a fatal accident involving a Tesla, they have shown remarkable progress.
Even if you are not confident when it comes to relying on technology to drive your car, the combined push for electric cars and smart technology will creep into most vehicles over the next decade. But it could be generations before we are ready to give up the familiar comfort of the steering wheel and gear stick. Even so, expect to see plenty more charging points as the number of hybrids and electric vehicles grows rapidly, all helping to nudge us towards this smart, driverless future.

Richard Hammond's Latest Prang Puts a New Marque in the Spotlight

Car makers love being featured on the old Top Gear and new The Grand Tour show,

allowing them some free advertising for their latest super or hypercar. But the bosses at Rimac Automobili, the maker of the Concept One, will be shaking their heads after Richard Hammond turned their million dollar electric racing car into a burnt-out heap.

The Croation company is definitely getting plenty of press, but perhaps not quite how they imagined. The Rimac Concept One is a 1,088 horsepower electric model with four engines, one for each wheel, which use an all-wheel torque vectoring system for stability and handling. Capable of 220mph, with a 217-mile range, each of the company's models is built to a highly limited number to maintain exclusivity, making Ferrari and Lamborghinis look distinctly common in comparison.
Richard Hammond's latest prang puts a new marque in the spotlight
The company first emerged at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 2011 and has only produced around 88 total models, presumably with some very exclusive number plates. There's a smaller racetrack-focused Concept S for those who want even more electrical performance. It is a partner of the Formula E world championship to promote green cars, Rimac also provides components for other high-powered cars like Koenigsegg and Aston Martin
Whatever the company does next, it will always be haunted by the tagline of "makers of the car that Richard Hammond crashed", but for those who can afford them, it will do little do dampen enthusiasm around this most limited of supercars. With the company operating in a highly secretive manner, we don't know what the next vehicle off its tiny production line will be, but we can look forward to plenty of more stories and coverage than it would have otherwise received.
For reference, Hammond had been driving the electric car for a few days before hand, so should have been used to its distinct performance and handling characteristics. Even so, questions are being asked about the show, which might have to be delayed as he recovers from a fractured knee, and the attitude of the stars to their driving, particularly their love of inherently dangerous mountain roads where this accident took place.
